The treatment of sinusitis depends on its cause, severity and duration of symptoms.
If your symptoms are mild and occur immediately after a cold, you can try simple remedies like Panadol to relieve the pain and nose drops to decongest the nose. You can also apply a warm pack over your face to reduce the discomfort.
Other treatment methods include:
Antibiotics
Nasal douche
Nasal steroid sprays
Chronic sinusitis is typically not caused by a bacterial infection, so treating the condition with antibiotics usually does not help. When conservative treatments or medications fail, surgery is required to reverse the obstruction in the sinuses.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove diseased sinus cells and open up the natural drainage pathways between the sinuses and the nasal cavity.
The sinus surgeon will gently insert a small instrument, an endoscope, into your nostril to examine the area to be operated on, then use specialised tools to restore drainage and ventilation between your nose and your sinuses.
While open sinus procedures often require facial incisions resulting in visible scars and the need for nasal packing, with FESS, the sinus surgeon can have a better view within your nose and sinuses. FESS is almost always done completely through the nostrils, leaving no visible signs and less scarring.
